Why pricing in surface treatment is difficult
An item comes in. The salesperson has to assess geometry, area, weight, pre-treatment, number of coats, RAL colour, and lead time — and translate all of it into a price. That requires experience and takes time. When things get busy, calculations are made quickly. When calculations are made quickly, margin slips away.
Standard CPQ systems are built for discrete products with fixed prices. Surface treatment is continuous variables: an area, a weight, a quantity. The rules live in overhead spreadsheets and in the head of the senior salesperson who has been here for 20 years. It is vulnerable.
